About This Guide

A Book List Cannot Hold the Whole Reading Experience

You remember that a book mattered, but the passage, question or change of mind has slipped away. Meanwhile, the next-read list keeps growing. Digital Reading Journal brings practical tracking and thoughtful reflection into one local-file bundle. Keep the books you are reading visible, record the sessions you choose to log and make space for your own explanation of what the book means to you.

Keep Your Reading Queue in Order

The Library sheet records a book ID, title, author, total pages, current page and status. For paged editions, the progress calculation uses the current page you enter. That gives the reading record a clear basis without requiring a social profile or an automatic book database. You choose the titles and maintain their details, keeping the queue relevant to your interests and available time.

Separate Activity from Progress

A session can be valuable even when you return to a familiar chapter. The Sessions sheet records dates, book IDs, page ranges and minutes, with inclusive page counts for complete ranges. Its total is labelled pages logged because rereading can repeat them. Your Library progress remains a separate manual update. This distinction lets you record the reading you actually do without turning repeated pages into a claim that you have advanced further through the book.

Write Something You Can Return To

The reflection worksheet asks why you chose the book, how you would explain its main idea, which evidence supports your view and where you disagree. Add edition and passage references, then connect the reading to a question or application. A separate book-club discussion template in the HTML companion makes room for competing interpretations and what changed your view. These are prompts for your own thinking, rather than supplied reviews or answers. For example, a short note can distinguish a claim the author makes from your response to it. A clear reference gives you a way back to the passage when you reconsider it or discuss another interpretation.

Choose a Manageable Next Step

Use Reading Goals to enter a period, a target and your manually recorded finished-book count. The remaining-books calculation keeps that particular goal visible. Complete reflection fields in a suitable PDF viewer or edit the HTML document in your preferred editor. Both A4 and US Letter PDF editions are included. Save a clean master and a working copy, replace the fictional examples and begin with one book you want to understand more fully. The bundle provides a reading record and reflection structure; it does not supply books, personalised recommendations or a reading-speed assessment.

What You Will Receive

Your download includes the XLSX workbook with Library, Sessions and Reading Goals; a fillable reflection worksheet in separate A4 and US Letter PDFs; the guide in both paper sizes; an editable HTML companion with reflection and book-club discussion templates; and START_HERE.txt. Customer edition 1.1 corrects empty and incomplete session page ranges. No books, hosted Google Sheet, automated book lookup or personalised recommendations are supplied. Use suitable spreadsheet software and a PDF viewer that supports form fields. Native Excel, Excel printing and Google Sheets compatibility have not been independently verified. The licence allows internal use by one purchaser, household or business and sharing your completed documents, while prohibiting source-template resale and redistribution. No physical journal or device is shipped.

What’s Inside

Library and Reading Queue

Keep each book's ID, title, author and status together with its total and current page. The workbook calculates progress from those manually entered page values, with a not-applicable result when a valid total is unavailable. You maintain the details rather than relying on an imported catalogue. Use the record to see what you have chosen to read and where you currently are in a paged edition.

A Session Log That Respects Rereading

Record the date, book ID, first and last page, and minutes for each session. Complete page ranges count both endpoints, while a reversed range is flagged for checking. Customer edition 1.1 leaves the page count blank for an empty or incomplete range, so minutes-only audio sessions do not add a fictional page. The total represents logged activity, including repeated pages, rather than unique progress through your library.

Reading Goals You Set Yourself

Choose a period and enter your target books and finished-book count. The remaining calculation floors at zero when the target is reached. Finished counts are maintained manually; the sheet does not infer completion from a Library status or session entry. This keeps the goal simple to review alongside your own judgement about what to read next and how much time you want to give it.

Fillable Reflection in Two Paper Sizes

The A4 and US Letter reflection PDFs provide text fields for the book and edition, your reason for choosing it, its main idea in your words, evidence references, a question or disagreement, an application and your rating explanation. Complete and save a copy in a suitable PDF viewer, then reopen it to confirm the entries. The fields record text and do not calculate.

Editable Discussion Pages and Setup Guidance

The HTML companion includes the reflection structure and a book-club discussion section: opening reaction, a passage reference, competing interpretation, a question for the group and what changed your view. Edit it in an HTML-capable editor or use it for reading and printing. The accompanying guide explains setup, fictional examples, manual updates, scope and permitted use. No books, supplied reviews or automated recommendations are included. Keep quotations short and referenced, and write summaries in your own language. A completed discussion page can help you compare your first reaction with the view you hold after talking about the book.

Who It’s For

  • Adult Readers — When your reading list grows faster than your notes, give each book a clear place in the Library. Keep a current-page record and a reflection you can revisit after the cover closes.
  • Book-Club Participants — When discussion needs more than a quick rating, prepare a passage reference, question and competing interpretation. Use the HTML discussion structure to bring your own considered view to the conversation.
  • Self-Directed Learners — When you read to explore an idea, explain it in your own words and identify the evidence behind your interpretation. Record a disagreement or application so the reading connects to a useful next question.
  • Rereaders — When you return to a chapter, record the session without treating those repeated pages as new progress. Keep activity and current-page position distinct while making room for a changed interpretation.
  • Mixed-Format Readers — When you move between paged books and audio or unpaged editions, record the format-appropriate information. Use minutes where page counts do not apply, and keep reflections connected to the edition you actually read.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this a reading journal, a book collection or a reading app?

It is a local-file reading tracker and reflection bundle. You receive an Excel workbook, fillable PDFs, guides and editable HTML templates. Books, an online reading app and a hosted workspace are not included.

What is included in the customer download?

Your download includes Library, Sessions and Reading Goals in an XLSX workbook; reflection and guide PDFs in A4 and US Letter; an HTML companion with reflection and book-club discussion sections; and START_HERE.txt. Paper sizes repeat the same content.

Does logging a session update my book progress automatically?

No. Update the current page in Library manually. Session page counts record logged activity and can include rereading, so they are kept separate from progress through a particular book.

Can I use the journal for audiobooks or unpaged editions?

You can record minutes and use the reflection fields with the appropriate edition details. In customer edition 1.1, empty or incomplete session page ranges do not add pages. Leave page counts unavailable where they do not apply rather than inventing an equivalent.

What does the workbook calculate?

It calculates Library progress from entered current and total pages, inclusive page counts for complete session ranges, pages logged and remaining books for a goal. A reversed page range is flagged. You enter book details, current pages and finished-book counts yourself.

Are the reflection PDFs fillable?

Yes. Each A4 and US Letter reflection worksheet has seven text fields. Complete and save a copy in a suitable PDF viewer, then reopen it to confirm your entries. The fields do not calculate totals.

Can I use the discussion template for my book club?

The HTML companion includes prompts for your opening reaction, passage reference, competing interpretation, group question and what changed your view. You may share your own completed documents under the supplied licence; do not distribute the blank source templates.

Does it include Google Sheets, book recommendations or automatic lookup?

No hosted Google Sheet, supplied book recommendations or automated metadata lookup is included. The files are maintained locally. Native Excel behaviour, Excel printing, Google Sheets compatibility and HTML browser behaviour have not been independently verified for this release.
